Bringing Memory Forward: Musealia’s Auschwitz Exhibition Continues Its North American Journey

06.23.2025

Halfway through its stay at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. has already welcomed over 100,000 visitors in just a few months. The powerful response from Canadian audiences underscores the profound relevance of this exhibition—one that brings difficult histories into focus, fosters deep reflection, and helps preserve the memory of the Holocaust.

Developed by Musealia in partnership with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the exhibition will remain at the ROM until 1 September 2025. Its presence in one of North America’s most respected cultural institutions is a milestone in Musealia’s mission: to connect global audiences with the past through emotionally resonant, academically rigorous, and carefully curated experiences.

Each project is shaped by years of research, the inclusion of original artefacts, and the guidance of world-renowned historians, led in this case by chief curator Dr. Robert Jan van Pelt. At the same time, each exhibition is adapted to the historical and cultural context of its host city—ensuring its relevance, accessibility, and emotional impact. “At the heart of this project is the idea of bringing the history of Auschwitz, in all its complexity, to the world” explained Luis Ferreiro, director of Musealia.

This autumn, Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. will continue its North American journey with a new opening at the Cincinnati Museum Center in Ohio, expanding the reach of its message even further. An opportunity to engage new communities, invite more visitors to confront one of the darkest moments in our shared history, and to continue asking a powerful question: what will we choose to remember, and how will we act on it?
